Tourplan vs TourKnife: a question of size, not just features
Some comparisons are settled by reading feature lists. This is not one of them. Tourplan has been on the market since 1986, has clients in dozens of countries and covers practically everything a large operator or DMC could need. If the question were “who has more functions?”, the answer would be easy and it would not be us. The useful question is a different one: what size of tool does your business actually need, and what price do you pay —in money, in time and in complexity— for the parts you will never use?
We are TourKnife and we are not going to pretend we play in the same league as an enterprise product. What we say about Tourplan comes from its public website and from what operators who evaluated it or worked alongside it before coming to us have told us. We are not attributing shortcomings to it: it is a highly capable system.
What Tourplan is strong at
Tourplan integrates sales, operations and finance in one system, at a scale very few reach. It handles sourcing and packaging across multiple suppliers, quotation, real-time supplier connectivity for rates and availability, integrated accounting, and distribution over web and XML. It covers FIT, groups, MICE, tailor-made travel and scheduled series, and serves outbound operators, inbound operators and DMCs alike.
That breadth, sustained over decades and across continents, is hard to argue with. For a large organisation with high volume, several offices and complex financial requirements, Tourplan is a first-tier option and it would be dishonest to suggest otherwise.
Where TourKnife is different
TourKnife does not compete on breadth: it competes on fit. It is focused on one specific profile —the group travel operator with scheduled departures sold seat by seat— and on making that particular job fast and comfortable.
Selling direct, seat by seat, without friction. TourKnife’s booking engine sells in real time on your own website to end customers, and it does so with the casuistry a group generates: optional extras per traveller, shared room as a booking mode for solo travellers, individual supplements, date-bound discount campaigns, different prices per channel and forms configured departure by departure. Many large systems are designed to sell through agencies and B2B structures; TourKnife is just as comfortable selling direct to the traveller as through an extranet to your retailers, on the same inventory.
Live in weeks, not quarters. Implementing an enterprise system is a project in its own right. TourKnife is deployed through an onboarding that covers environment setup, training and automated import of your data, designed so a small team is operating soon without an IT department behind them.
A tool the whole team actually uses. A responsive web application, nothing to install, reachable from any device. The learning curve matters when the person who has to use the system daily is the same person answering the phone and getting on the coach.
Multi-service operations at your scale. Chained services by supplier with the allotment contracted from each, and availability calculated from the scarcest mandatory service: the same underlying logic a large operator needs, without the machinery that only makes sense with hundreds of users.
Direct payment and invoicing built in. You collect through your own gateway —Stripe, PayPal, Revolut or RedSys— with no intermediary and no commission on your sale, and you invoice inside the system, exporting the data in the formats your market’s rules require.
A complete website included. You can build your operator’s website under your own brand, connected to the system’s catalogue, availability and prices, without a separate web project.
When to choose each one
Let us be clear, because honesty here saves everyone money:
Tourplan may suit you better if you are a large organisation with high volume, several offices or markets, complex financial and accounting requirements, very diverse product (FIT, MICE, inbound, bespoke) and the capacity to take on a proper implementation project. If you are in that league, the power justifies the complexity.
TourKnife may suit you better if you are a small or mid-sized operator focused on group travel with scheduled departures, if you sell direct to travellers as well as through agencies, if you need to be operational soon and without a long project, and if you want invoicing resolved inside the tool.
Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between Tourplan and TourKnife?
Size and focus. Tourplan is a generalist enterprise system covering sales, operations and finance for large operators and DMCs worldwide. TourKnife is a tool specialised in the group travel operator with scheduled departures sold seat by seat, with fast implementation and invoicing that adapts to local requirements.
Is Tourplan better than TourKnife?
In breadth of features and in capacity for large organisations, Tourplan is ahead and we have no difficulty saying so. In fit, agility and total cost for a mid-sized group operator selling direct, we believe TourKnife suits better. They are answers to different questions.
How long does it take to get TourKnife running?
It depends on the volume of data and the complexity of your catalogue, but onboarding is designed for small teams: environment setup, initial training and automated data import, with no technical department required. We can give you a realistic estimate if you tell us about your case.
Can I sell directly to travellers with TourKnife?
Yes, and it is one of its strong points. The booking engine sells in real time on your website to end customers, with optional extras, shared rooms, discounts and per-departure forms, while the B2B extranet sells to your agencies on the same inventory at different prices.
If you are weighing up whether you need an enterprise system or a specialised tool, tell us your volume and your product: we will say frankly if we think TourKnife would fall short for you. We can run a demo on one of your real departures. There is detail on the features page, or go back to the group travel software comparison.
